Gender and Sexuality

At TheraThrive we specialize in working with gifted and/or highly sensitive people, including those who are exploring their gender and/or sexuality, and those who identify with the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc.). The practice is LGBTQIA friendly, transgender friendly, and Kink friendly.

Gender, Sexuality and COVID-19

COVID-19 is impacting us all, however for the LGBTQ+ community in particular, the impact can be more severe and intense. COVID-19 and sheltering-in-place has increased isolation, loneliness, and disconnect from social support.

For those who may identify with the LGBTQ+ community, there may be a loss of connection with chosen family, accepting social support people, and other LGBTQ+ members/allies. You may feel trapped with people who increase shame and stigma, and struggle with expressing your authentic self due to this, but you are not alone.

We are here to remind you that you are accepted and cared for, and we are ready to work with you and support you during this difficult time. Online Therapy is a way that we can help.

Let’s talk to see if working together makes sense. Contact us so that we can answer your questions, or schedule a consultation to get started. We also offer single-session drop-in appointments if you need temporary support or just want to try counseling for one meeting or only a few.

Our therapists consider gender and sexuality as aspects of our identities, and we view these aspects from a non-judgmental and caring lens. We will support you in gaining self-understanding.

Questioning

Questioning parts of identity is common, and we are here to help you manage any changes as they come up. We understand the connections between romantic feelings, gender and sexuality, and we offer support through the process of learning about who you are and finding your authentic self.

We have worked with, and are educated on, a variety of identities—including, yet not limited to, the following:

Sexual Identities

Gay and Lesbian Identified
Bisexual
Asexual
Pansexual
Straight
Curious
Questioning

Gender Spectrum

Trans-Identified

Cis-gender Identified

Two-Spirit
Questioning

Do I need therapy if I identify on the LGBTQ+ spectrum?

Rather than viewing your gender or sexuality as a pathology, we work to help you learn to manage possible mental health effects of questioning your identity. We do not believe that everyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ needs therapy, although we think that counseling and therapeutic support can be beneficial for many people. We are here for those who want support and a safe space.

Challenges

Some of the challenges that people may experience when questioning their gender and/or sexuality or identify with the LGBTQ+ community might include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Feelings of shame and/or stigma
  • Social isolation
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Struggling with an eating disorder
  • Substance use and/or abuse
  • HIV+ concerns
At TheraThrive we want to help you live your life as your authentic self, without struggling with shame or worry. We work to provide you with the space needed to rediscover who you are, and we validate your journey, exploration, and bravery to becoming your true-you!
