Joseph Beaty, M.A., PCCI, IMF

Hello, my name is Joseph Beaty, a therapy intern at TheraThrive in Walnut Creek, CA. Please feel free to take a look at the services I offer, and learn about my approach, in order to consider how I may be helpful to you.

Beginning therapy can be an intimidating process, especially when one has no prior experience working with a therapist. It is one of my goals to help you not only feel comfortable seeking help, but also to help you understand the therapy process as a whole including what it can entail for you.

I am currently both a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern (IMF90072) and Professional Clinical Counselor Intern (PCCI2860), and I provide psychotherapy services to individuals who are interested in making positive changes in their lives and their experience.

As an intern, I have gained over 2500 hours of experience, as I am still working towards my 3,000 hours needed for licensure under the direct supervision of Dr. Grace Malonai (Ph.D., LPCC252). After accumulating 3,000 hours, I am then eligible to sit for the licensing exams, and thereafter will be a licensed MFT and PCC.

It Is A Privilege

I consider it a privilege to be able to be with another person who is seeking support and understanding; a privilege I take very seriously. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my work is to be able to support and help individuals understand and explore their past, their beliefs and values, as well as their current understanding of themselves. Even though beginning therapy can feel difficult, I will work with you every step of the way, and provide you with a comfortable, safe, and peaceful environment.

Joseph’s Education and Experience

I earned my M.A. in Counseling at Saint Mary’s College of California, with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy, as well as professional clinical counseling. I also completed a thesis on alcohol and substance abuse in college-aged individuals. Prior to my M.A. program, I earned my B.A. in Political Science, with a minor in History at UC Davis.

Along with working at TheraThrive, I also work at a local non-profit mental health clinic. In the past, I have worked with College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, as well as Foothill High School in Pleasanton as a therapy intern, and led sessions with both children and families. I was also employed by an non-profit organization that specializes in working with adolescents and families that have been affected by trauma.

I have experience with a wide range of diagnoses and difficulties such as trauma, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, depression, ADHD, adoption, divorce, grief, attachment issues, substance abuse, adolescents, eating disorders, and anger management.

Personal Interests

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, and have lived in multiple communities in the area that I have been pleased to call home. In my spare time, I enjoy being active. Whether it be through running on a trail, taking a hike, or going to the gym, I like to stay moving. One of my other favorite pastimes is reading, a hobby that I try to do often, but wish I had more time for! I hope you enjoyed learning a bit about me, and feel free to learn more by reading below.
